As is the case across many sectors, the print industry has experienced a lot of change in recent years as innovative new technologies come to light. Direct-to-film, better known as DTF, has revolutionised the way in which garments are printed offering several benefits versus traditional digital transfer and screen printing methods. In this guide, we will explore what DTF printing actually is, its benefits, and how My Personalised Clothing can assist you in creating high-quality personalised clothing using DTF printing.
What is DTF printing?
DTF stands for direct-to-film. It is a printing technique that involves printing designs directly onto a specialised piece of film, which is then transferred onto the garment. We will cover the process in greater detail below. DTF printing bypasses the need for transfer papers which typically results in a more detailed print that is longer lasting, with enhanced durability versus other printing methods. DTF printing is a lot more complicated compared to other printing methods (such as screen & vinyl) and requires an expert approach to ensure you end up with a professional finished product. Contact our team if you need support in DTF printing on garments or apparel.
What is the DTF printing process?
Before the DTF printing process begins, as is the same as all other printing processes, you need to create or select a design and also a garment you would like to personalise. Why not opt for a custom hoodie? Once you have your design and garment ready, we can now start with the DTF printing process.
Firstly, the design is printed onto a heat-sensitive film using dedicated DTF printers, which are equipped with specialised inks. These inks are normally water-based pigment inks which are specifically created to be durable and long-lasting when printed on clothing and other merchandise. Once the design is printed, it undergoes a curing process to ensure the inks bond with the film properly. The printed film is then placed on the clothing garment that is being customised. Heat and pressure are then applied using a heat press machine, resulting in a high-quality printed garment.
This is how we create high-quality DTF-printed clothing for businesses and individuals across the UK.
DTF Vs DTG
It goes without saying, but DTF and DTG are two of the most popular printing techniques for clothing and other merchandise. But what are the key differences between the two? Well DTG stands for direct-to-garment and as the name suggests, means designs are printed directly onto the garment, rather than using a film transfer. Whilst this might sound more straightforward at a top level, both processes take a very similar amount of time once you have all the equipment and processes in place – as we do at MPC!
Furthermore, DTF offers superior durability compared to DTG, allowing for more intricate and long-lasting designs. That’s not to say that DTG printing doesn’t have its place. We always pick the best printing method for your clothing, to ensure you end up with a high-quality product that will stand the test of time.
Benefits of DTF printing
Although we have already touched on this in the previous section, here are a few of the main benefits of direct-to-film printing:
- Vibrancy – DTF printing truly brings your designs to life with enhanced colour vibrancy compared to other printing methods.
- Washability – Don’t you hate it when your printed clothing starts to crack or fade after only a couple of washes? We do. DTF-printed garments are more resistant to fading, making it a perfect method for professional personalised workwear.
- Versatility – DTF printing can be administered on a wide range of fabrics including cotton, polyester, and much more.
These are only a few of the benefits of DTF printing but should give you a better idea as to why it is such a phenomenon in the world of fashion and textiles.
