Hoodies vs Sweatshirts: What’s the Difference?

Hoodies and sweatshirts are two staple garments that you will find in most modern wardrobes. At a glance, there is a lot in common between these trusty old items. Fabrics are often similar, they both ensure you stay warm, and also both keep you comfortable throughout the day. But when you really look into it, the hoodie vs sweatshirt debate is an interesting one, and both are more suited to certain scenarios.

Being experts in all things clothing for over two decades, we wanted to offer our insights into the hoodie vs sweatshirt topic. What actually are these garments? How do they differ? What properties do they share? And what is best for your needs, uses and lifestyle? Strap in, because today we are going to cover everything you need to know about hoodies vs sweatshirts.

We recommend reading the full article, but if you are in a rush, you can jump ahead to the section that interests you the most:

An Overview Of Hoodies Vs Sweatshirts

The main difference between a hoodie and a sweatshirt is the hood. A hoodie features an attached hood with a drawstring and usually a front kangaroo pocket. A sweatshirt has neither. It is a cleaner, simpler garment with a crew neck and no hood. Both are made from similar fleece-backed fabrics and are designed for casual, everyday wear, but the hood changes how each garment looks, feels, and functions. Hoodies tend to skew more casual and streetwear-influenced, while sweatshirts offer a slightly smarter, more versatile look.

To make things easy, we’ve broken the key differences down in the table below. We’ll then go into a bit more detail on the points that are worth expanding on later in the article:

What Is A Sweatshirt?

A sweatshirt is a long-sleeved pullover garment that is composed of thicker fabrics, often cotton, polyester, or a cotton-polyester blend. Sweatshirts are collarless and will usually feature a crew neck ( the round neckline that sits close to the base of the throat), along with ribbed cuffs and a ribbed hem. The ribbed sections are the elasticated fabric bands at the end of the sleeves and around the bottom of the garment, which help it hold its shape and sit neatly against the body.

Sweatshirt fits can differ. Women’s sweatshirts, such as the AWDis Women’s Sweatshirt, feature a slimmer fit that is typically seen to be more feminine. On the flipside, some men’s fits that are designed for more casual settings often feature a more casual oversized boxy-fit, just like the AWDis Signature Heavyweight Unisex Sweatshirt. Often, your traditional sweatshirt will sit somewhere in the middle. A classic fit that is neither oversized nor slim fitting, perfect for professional contexts or everyday wear. One great example of this is the AWDis Unisex Sweatshirt.

What Is A Hoodie?

A hoodie is a long-sleeved pullover or zip-up garment, similar in fabric and construction to a sweatshirt. There is however one defining feature and that is the attached hood. The hood is typically adjustable via a drawstring, allowing the wearer to tighten or loosen it around the face to their desired fit. As a general rule, most hoodies also feature a front kangaroo pocket – the large single pocket that sits across the lower front of the garment. Not all styles include one, though. Like sweatshirts, hoodies are usually made from cotton, polyester, or a cotton-polyester blend, with a fleece-backed interior for warmth and comfort.

Hoodie fits come in all different shapes and sizes. Oversized hoods are particularly popular for casual wear. The AWDis Signature Heavyweight Unisex Hoodie is one such example, featuring a stylish oversized box-fit that wouldn’t look out of place in anybody’s wardrobe. Feminine hoodie styles are also commonplace, with the AWDis Girlie College Hoodie featuring a slimmer look that is just as stylish as its oversized counterpart. Beyond slim, box or oversized styling, the neckline itself can also offer different styling options. The AWDis Cross Neck Hoodie is one example of this, featuring a unique cross-over neck, which keeps you warm and is stylish to boot.

What’s the Difference Between a Hoodie and a Sweatshirt?

Now that we have a clear picture of both garments individually, let’s get into the real comparison. As we touched on in the key differences section, the hood is the most obvious distinction – but it’s not the only one. The two garments differ in subtle ways across fit, pockets, neckline, and the occasions they’re best suited to.

The biggest practical difference beyond the hood itself comes down to styling. A sweatshirt’s clean crew neck and simple fit mean it is more appropriate in a wider range of settings. You can layer it under a jacket. Wear it over a shirt. Pair it with chinos, jeans or joggers without it looking out of place. A hoodie, by contrast, has a stronger casual identity. The hood and kangaroo pocket push it firmly into relaxed or streetwear territory, which is part of its appeal – but it does limit where you can take it.

Fit is also worth noting. Both garments come in oversized, slim, and classic cuts, so fit alone isn’t really a differentiator. What does differ is how each fit reads on each garment. An oversized sweatshirt can still look considered and intentional. An oversized hoodie leans much more casual by comparison. It all depends on context and what look, application or aesthetic you want to achieve.

Which Is Warmer – Hoodies or Sweatshirts?

This is a question that comes up a lot. The honest answer? It depends. Fabric weight matters more than the garment itself. A heavyweight sweatshirt will keep you warmer than a lightweight hoodie every time. So, assuming they are both warmer simply because one has a hood is not quite right.

That said, when the fabric weight is equal, a hoodie has the edge. The hood adds meaningful insulation around the neck and head – two areas where body heat escapes quickly. In cold or wet weather, being able to pull a hood up makes a noticeable difference, and that is something a sweatshirt simply cannot offer.

So if warmth is your priority, look at the GSM (grams per square metre) first – the higher the number, the heavier and warmer the fabric. From there, if you are likely to be outdoors or in colder conditions, a hoodie is the better choice. If you want warmth without the hood, say for a smart casual setting or a branded workwear context, a heavyweight sweatshirt will serve you just as well.

When Should You Wear a Hoodie vs a Sweatshirt?

Both are built for casual wear, but the right choice shifts depending on the occasion. Here is a quick guide:

Reach for a hoodie when:

  • You are heading outdoors and want the option to pull a hood up
  • You are wearing sportswear, training kit, or an active outfit
  • You want a relaxed, streetwear-influenced look
  • You are dressing for a casual social setting
  • You are ordering personalised merchandise or event clothing

Reach for a sweatshirt when:

  • You want something that sits smarter without being formal
  • You are layering under a jacket or over a collared shirt
  • You are producing branded workwear or staff uniforms
  • You want a cleaner print canvas for a logo or design
  • You are dressing for a smart casual setting where a hoodie feels too relaxed

Which Is Better for Customisation?

The good news is that both hoodies and sweatshirts are perfect for customisation. At My Personalised Clothing, we use industry-leading decoration methods, including vinyl heat transfer, DTF printing, screen printing, and embroidery across both garment types. Whichever you go for, the end result will look great.

Want a clean, uninterrupted print canvas? A sweatshirt is hard to beat. The simple crew neck and flat front give your design maximum space and visibility. Fancy something more stylish and casual? Go for a hoodie. Whilst you can customise the back of a sweatshirt, it is more common to see hoodies with bold back prints or large graphic designs. That makes hoodies the number one choice for sports teams, events, and anyone wanting to make a statement.

Whatever you go for, design and order with My Personalised Clothing. We offer no minimum order across all personalised hoodies and custom sweatshirts. You can order a single sample before committing to anything larger. The best part? You get free UK delivery on every single order. You can’t say fairer than that.
